– Discover Two New LASAN Environmental Programs
Here at LA Stormwater, we talk a lot about discovering your watershed moment. It’s that “A-ha!” moment when you discover a new environmental practice that will keep your neighborhood and local watershed clean. And while many of you have already committed to always picking up after your dogs or pledging to use reusable bags, here are two recently-started LA Sanitation and Environment programs that you may want to explore:
Create A Wildlife-Friendly Garden
Did you know that Los Angeles is located within a globally recognized hotspot of native biodiversity?
Recently, the city of Los Angeles became the largest US city to be certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation (or NWF) and we are fortunate to be located within a globally recognized hotspot of native biodiversity.
Individual residents, businesses, and schools can easily certify their properties with the National Wildlife Federation to earn points for the City of Los Angeles in the Community Wildlife Habitat Program. In order to become certified, green spaces need to provide four basic elements that all wildlife need: food, water, cover, and a place to raise young. In addition, gardens must also use sustainable practices, like conserving water and removing invasive plants.
Learn how you can create a wildlife-friendly garden in your yard at LASAN’s Community Wildlife Habitat webpage.
Explore Outreach Materials in 12 (yes, 12!) Languages
Did you know that LASAN’s Watershed Protection Program has educational materials in 12 different languages?
We have outreach materials (think tip cards and fliers) in English, Armenian, Simplified Chinese, Farsi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese. If you are planning an upcoming environmental fair or community event or simply have a friend, family member or neighbor who you think would benefit from educational materials in a different language, we encourage you to contact us at lastormwater@lacity.org to ask about the availability of these materials.
Do you have an environmental practice that is new to you? We’d love to hear from you. Email us at lastormwater@lacity.org to share.
