Nothing quite gets on in the mood for celebration like a SoCal summer. The bright sunshine and balmy weather sets the perfect backdrop for an excellent party – from a backyard barbeque to a full-on block-spanning blowout. However, for every fun shindig under the summer sun, we always have to remember to keep consideration for the places we party at, the sky we party under, and the earth we party on top of. That’s why we’re here to give you some quick-tips to keep in mind when planning your next summer celebration!

Grill Greener: Sustainable BBQ Practices

A backyard BBQ is a quintessential summer activity, but how you grill can make a big difference for the environment. Opt for a gas grill over a charcoal one when possible. Gas grills produce fewer pollutants and are generally more energy-efficient.

If you prefer the flavor that comes with charcoal, consider using lump charcoal made from sustainable sources instead of traditional briquettes. When the BBQ is over, ensure your charcoal is completely cooled before disposal. Place it in a metal container and never dump it directly onto the ground or in plastic bags. You can also look into composting the ash if your compost pile is set up to handle it.

Eco-Friendly Kitchenware: Ditch the Disposables

One of the biggest sources of waste at any party is disposable kitchenware. Instead of single-use plastic plates, cups, and utensils, opt for reusable or compostable options. Many stores now carry compostable plates and utensils made from materials like bamboo or palm leaves.

If you have the budget, you could even provide guests with a small custom reusable souvenir cup specifically from your event that they can take home and use again. Not only does this cut down on waste, but it also adds a personal touch to your event.

Fire Safety: Keep the Flames in Check

Nothing can ruin a party faster than an unexpected fire. Here are some tips to keep your BBQ or bonfire safe:

  1. Grill Placement: Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  2. Fire Extinguisher: Always have a fire extinguisher nearby, and make sure you know how to use it.
  3. Bonfire Safety: If you’re planning on having a bonfire, ensure it’s allowed in your area and keep it contained in a fire pit. Never leave it unattended, and have a water source nearby to extinguish it quickly if needed.
  4. Fireworks: Leave fireworks to the professionals. Fireworks are not only dangerous but are also illegal in many parts of Los Angeles due to the high risk of wildfires.

Water-Wise Tips: Conserve While You Celebrate

Summer parties can use a lot of water, especially if you have water activities planned. Here are some ways to stay water-wise:

  • Water Games: If you’re planning water games, use a kiddie pool instead of a hose or sprinkler to save water.
  • Drink Dispensers: Use large drink dispensers instead of individual bottles of water. This reduces plastic waste and encourages guests to drink just what they need.

Clean-Up Crew: Leave No Trace

When the party’s over, a thorough clean-up ensures you leave your space as beautiful as you found it. Have separate bins for recycling, compost, and trash, and make sure they’re clearly labeled so guests can help out. Take the time to properly dispose of all waste, and consider donating any leftover, unopened food to a local food bank.

By following these tips, you can throw an amazing, eco-friendly summer party that’s safe, fun, and respectful to our beautiful city. We hope you’ll take our tips to heart and enjoy greening up your gatherings! (And enjoy the gatherings themselves, of course!)
