What better way to get in some exercise for yourself and your pup than exploring Los Angeles’ trails? Trail access has been increasing, which means now is the perfect time to take your pet out on an excursion. But not all trails are created equal, and most require that your dog be on-leash. Visit one of the rare, off-leash excursions listed below to allow you and your pet to experience the true freedom of the outdoors!

  1. Trebek Open Space, Los Angeles: Named for the famous game show host, two trails (Bantam Trail and Castair Trail) in the Trebek Open Space are perfect for you and your dog to roam. Located near the Hollywood Hills, stop and take in sweeping views of the city along the path.
  2. Runyon Canyon Trail, Runyon Canyon Park: This 1.9 mile loop has some elevation gain but great views overlooking Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills. If you want to extend your day, check out one of the many other trails in this 130 acre park.
  3. Mandeville Canyon Trail, Sullivan Canyon Park: A moderate 7.1 mile out-and-back trail, this trail has breathtaking views along its mountainous ridges. Check out the wildflowers and views of the coast while visiting.
  4. Westridge Trail, Westridge-Canyonback Wilderness: This 7.4 mile trail has lots of different topography for your pup to explore. At the top, enjoy views of both downtown and the ocean.
  5. Sullivan Canyon Trail, Sullivan Canyon Park: This rigorous 9.5 mile trail is a good out and back trail to explore when you have a bit more time. With ample shade and a creek traversing, this trail can be very busy on the weekends.

Not sure whether a trail you are interested in visiting allows dogs? Go to this website to learn about the dog regulations on specific LA County trails. A larger database of trails can also be found here

And while adventuring, be sure to follow proper safety measures and always pick up your dog’s waste. Protect the environment from pollution by packing out any dog waste and putting it in a trash receptacle. And, if you are in need of dog waste bags, LASAN provides city of Los Angeles residents with free canisters of dog waste bags. The canisters easily attach to your dog’s leash and you may request them here.
