As we all plan for the upcoming festivities, why not pledge to making just a few simple tweaks for a more eco-friendly holiday season this year. Your loved ones and Mother Earth will both appreciate your dedication to helping create a more sustainable planet. So, grab a cup of eggnog and read on for three easy tips for creating greener gatherings this year:

Now Bring Us Some Figgy Pudding (in a reusable bowl)  – While it’s tempting to use single-use items, reusable plates and utensils are your better choice for the environment. Yes, water is used to wash all the plates but dishwashers are incredibly efficient and more water is used in the production and afterlife of single-use plates and utensils. Pass on paper and plastic! Celebrate in style this year!

Deck the Halls (in Eco-Friendly Style) – In our humble opinion nature is the best decorator. You may be surprised by how many holiday decorations you can find outside with a scavenger hunt in your neighborhood. That pine tree down the street could provide greenery for your mantel. Those red berries on a bush and pine cones lying on the ground could adorn your holiday table. Just be sure to ask neighbors before collecting your treasures.

All I Want For Christmas is an Upcycled Box – Over the course of a year, so many boxes and bags – from delivery boxes to nifty handled bags from our local barista – come and go in and out of our lives. Why not upcycle a few of those boxes and bags and use them to wrap holiday gifts? Besides, most of our loved ones only care about what’s IN that bag, right? And don’t forget to recycle all those boxes when the gift opening ends. Even better? Save them and use them again.

With just a few simple changes, you can make a big positive impact and create a truly eco-friendly holiday.

And, happy holidays from all of us here at LA Stormwater!
