Every so often, we shine a spotlight on a remarkable and groundbreaking project. We’re starting off 2025 by highlighting the project entitled Bending The River. Read on to learn more about this truly ambitious endeavor:
What is the Bending The River Project?
Conceived by environmental artist Lauren Bon and funded and built by Lauren Bon’s Metabolic Studios, Bending the River is a project that will divert dry-weather flow from the Los Angeles River, clean it and distribute it to irrigate the nearby Los Angeles State Historic Park.
Who is involved in Bending The River?
Bending The River has a multitude of partners. Its supporting partners include the City of Los Angeles’ LA Sanitation & Environment, LA DWP, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the County of Los Angeles and the State Water Resources Control Board to name just a few. The project necessitated the filing of almost 100 permits so that gives you an idea of the number of agencies involved in making this project a reality.
Where is Bending The River located?
Bending The River can be found in and just west of the Los Angeles River south of LA’s Elysian Valley area and immediately adjacent to the Metabolic Studios (1745 North Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012). The project
Why is this project being done?
Bending the River provides Los Angeles with the opportunity to capture low-flow runoff from the LA River that would otherwise flow to the ocean and use it to irrigate nearby Los Angeles State Historic Park.
When will this project be completed?
The projected completion date of this project is April 22, 2025, Earth Day.
